How to fine-tune your drive ?
Transparent boost, targeted midrange, dynamic touch, maximum versatility: six pedals designed to work with your existing sound, not against it.
You already have a main sound. Your amp, your guitar, maybe a well-tuned overdrive - a base that works. The next question is no longer «what is my main sound? «how to improve it, refine it, push it exactly where it needs to be».».
These are often the pedals you activate to go from a good sound to one that's perfectly suited to the context - band, solo or studio.
This is the role of the pedals in the «Refine my drive» range. These are not replacement overdrives: they are precision tools. Some add transparency and body without coloration. Others target the midrange to break through in a band mix. Still others work the dynamics to the touch, or offer a wide gain range to cover several roles at once.
Straight to the point:
- You want a transparent boost → Centauride
- You want to sculpt your sound precisely → Tanto
- You play in a group and have to break through → Katana
- You want a single versatile pedal → Lord of Tone
All share the same construction - 100 % analog, through-hole components, hand-assembly - but their sound philosophies are distinct. This guide will help you identify which one is right for you.
Straight to the point
You want to grow without coloring
Your sound is fine, you just want more presence, level or articulation. The pedal should be transparent and not impose its character.
You want to break into a band mix
Your sound works on its own but disappears in a group. You're looking for a focused, effective midrange presence that brings out the guitar immediately without hardening the sound.
You play a lot with touch and attack
You want an overdrive that «listens» to the way you play: soft and clear when you stroke, saturated when you attack hard.
If you're looking for a singing, expressive sound
You want sustain, harmonic richness, a drive that behaves more like a hot-cut amp than a pedal.
You want a single pedal for multiple uses
Clean boost, light overdrive, heavier saturation - without changing pedals. The Lord of Tone covers it all with its distinct clipping modes.
Avoiding a casting error
If you want a big, muscular crunch or main saturation, these pedals are the wrong place to start. Consult the My Main Sound.

The range, from the most transparent to the most colorful
Gain level« alone is not the right criterion here. What counts more is the intention: does the pedal preserve your sound, or add a distinctive character? The Tanto and Centauride are very similar in gain, but their coloring philosophy is different.
The 6 pedals in the range
Transparent overdrive with the most precise spectrum control in the range.
Tanto is the natural choice when you want to adjust your sound without imposing it. Inspired by Timmy-type circuits, it lets the guitar and amp express themselves, while adding grain, presence and an active bass/treble EQ that lets you adapt the result to any setup.
Its active Bass and Treble controls operate independently, allowing you to deepen the bass while opening up the treble, for example. Internal dip switches and a saturation trimmer allow further customization. Controls : Volume, Drive, Bass, Treble. True bypass. It's not the right choice if : you're looking for a strong, assertive mid-range color.
The Klon boost par excellence - structuring, legible, adaptable.
Centauride does not seek to colour, it seeks to enhance what already exists. Inspired by the Klon circuit, it enhances presence, dynamics and playability, with a slight midrange accent that naturally helps the guitar stand out in a mix.
Sound 3-position clipping selector is a real added value: diode-free (pure clean boost), germanium (soft, compressed saturation), or Schottky (more modern, direct response). Internal DIP switches for midrange adjustment (Original / Fat / Max Mids). Internal True Bypass / Buffered selector. It's not the right choice if : you want an overdrive with a strong character and active equalization on bass and treble.
The pedal that reacts like an amp: clear when you touch it, saturated when you attack it.
The Mud Dauber is built around a simple philosophy: let the game control saturation. Its behavior is very similar to that of a finely-tuned tube amp - soft playing remains clear and articulate, while a stronger attack gradually brings out the saturation, without breakup or excessive compression.
The control Focus is the key to the pedal: it simultaneously acts on the saturation threshold and frequency balance. At low settings, the response is rounded and requires more attack. At higher settings, saturation appears more quickly and presence increases. It also works well as a boost in front of another pedal to enhance definition. It's not the right choice if : you're looking for an active EQ or a large, usable gain range.
A rich, singing, musical drive, in the spirit of Overdrive Special amps.
The Gladiator Overdrive is the more saturated, singing sister of the Gladiator Preamp. Where the Preamp is primarily concerned with articulation and clarity, the Overdrive adds musical compression, sustain and harmonic richness which give a feeling of notes «singing» under the fingers.
It remains strongly linked to gameplay and dynamics, in the spirit of Dumble's Overdrive Special. Its controls Gain, Tone, Presence, Volume and its Jazz/Rock switch allow fine adjustment of the register. The clipping switch modifies the character of the saturation. True bypass. It's not the right choice if : you're looking for a very high gain range or an aggressive, biting sound.
The mix pedal par excellence - present, defined, without overpowering the treble.
The Katana is based on a precise observation: playing in a band means having to exist in a mix with bass, drums and perhaps other instruments. It combines the midrange approach of the Tube Screamer with the transparency of the Timmy circuit to offer a targeted presence that cuts without hardening.
Its control Bass acts before saturation to prevent the build-up of low frequencies at the gain input - often a problem with this type of pedal. The control Saturation adjusts drive density independently of volume. Internal clipping options. 9 to 18V DC power supply (18V increases headroom). True bypass. It's not the right choice if : if you play mostly alone, or if you're looking for a very open, uncolored sound.
The most versatile of the selection, with a choice of clean boost, open overdrive or denser saturation.
The Lord of Tone stands out for its flexibility. Inspired by the Bluesbreaker circuit, it offers open, balanced saturation, without marked medium hump, which enables it to cover a wide spectrum without imposing a strong sound signature. This is often the right answer when you don't want to choose between several pedals.
The Voice selector changes behavior radically: soft clipping (gentle, natural overdrive), hard clipping (more density and attack), or pure boost without saturation. The 3-position Gain selector adapts the available range. Full equalization : Bass, Treble, Presence. True bypass. It's not the right choice if : you're looking for a highly characteristic coloration or a sound fundamentally colored by the philosophy of a specific amp.

How to choose?
Transparency or coloring?
If you want to preserve the character of your guitar and amp as much as possible, go for the Tanto or Centauride. If you're looking for (or willing to accept) a more pronounced coloration, the Gladiator or Katana are more suitable.
→ Tanto / Centauride vs. Gladiator / Katana
Tanto vs Centauride - which one?
The Tanto has a very flexible active bass/treble EQ. The Centauride relies on midrange and a 3-position clipping selector. If you're sensitive to the lower end of the spectrum and high frequencies, take the Tanto. If it's midrange presence and boost modes that count, go for the Centauride.
→ Precise EQ: Tanto - Midrange + clipping : Centauride
Do you play alone or in a group?
The Mud Dauber and Gladiator Overdrive shine in contexts where your playing takes center stage - solo, studio, nuanced. The Katana is clearly cut out for the band, where the guitar must exist in a dense mix.
→ Alone/nuanced: Mud Dauber - Group : Katana
Want just one flexible pedal?
The Lord of Tone is the only one in the selection to offer three truly distinct clipping modes, plus a 3-position gain selector. If the idea is to cover several needs without multiplying the boxes, this is the most straightforward track.
Stacking with a main sound?
The Centauride placed after a main overdrive improves the legibility of solos. The Mud Dauber upstream pushes the following pedal with greater dynamics. The Katana can also be used as an input booster before a slightly saturated amp.
→ Centauride at the end of the chain - Mud Dauber or Katana upstream
What about the «Mon Son Principal» range?
These six pedals are designed to complement an existing sound, not replace it. If you don't yet have a solid main sound, start by exploring the My Main Sound before returning here to refine it.
Find the pedal that refines your sound
These pedals don't replace your main sound - they make it better. Choose the one that suits your current needs: presence, dynamics, or versatility.
